Celebrating 80 Years of Man O’War GFC

What a truly memorable day we had on Saturday July 25th as Man O’War GFC proudly celebrated 80 years at the heart of our community.

The celebrations got underway at 3pm with our juvenile players taking to the pitch. It was fantastic to see so many young footballers showcasing their skills, enthusiasm and love for the game – a wonderful reminder that the future of our club is in very safe hands. Throughout the afternoon, families and friends enjoyed a BBQ, ice cream, refreshments and the great community atmosphere that makes Man O’War GFC so special.

One of the most poignant moments of the day was a special presentation to the Rooney family, whose extraordinary generosity helped shape the future of our club.

Eighty years ago, what the Rooney family gave us was far more than a field – they gave us a home. Local farmer Nicky Rooney allowed the club to use his land as a football pitch, famously saying, “As long as there is a team in Man O’ War, they can have the use of the field.” Those simple words became the foundation on which our club was built.

That incredible act of kindness has benefited generations of players, volunteers and families. It lives on in every child who takes to our pitches, every friendship formed through the club and every person who proudly wears the yellow and blue.

It was only fitting that we honoured the Rooney family’s lasting legacy with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at our clubhouse—a small token of appreciation for a gift that can never truly be repaid.

The celebrations continued with two entertaining Masters matches. Our Ladies Masters served up a fantastic contest, with Niamh White’s Yellow Team emerging victorious to lift the trophy presented by Bernice Jones Moore. The Men’s Masters game followed, with Willie Moore proudly accepting the winners’ trophy from Club Chairperson Sean Owens after another hugely enjoyable encounter.

As evening fell, celebrations moved to the Man O’War Pub where members, past players, families and friends gathered for a night filled with music, laughter, stories and cherished memories. It was a fitting end to a day that celebrated not only our proud history, but the people who have made Man O’War GFC what it is today.

A huge thank you to our dedicated 80th Anniversary Committee, whose hard work, planning and commitment delivered a truly outstanding weekend of celebrations. We also thank everyone who attended, volunteered, played, supported and helped make the occasion so special.
